Brooke Henderson Visit Leads to C4K Donation from Skechers

Golf and students were front and centre in Smiths Falls on Oct. 6 as LGPA pro-golfer Brooke Henderson visited her elementary alma mater and made a surprise donation to the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) Champions For Kids Foundation (C4K).

The donation, in the amount of $5,000 from Henderson’s sponsor Skechers Canada, was presented at a special event at Chimo Elementary School.

As part of the event, 50 students ranging from Kindergarten to Grade 8 were invited to the school’s gym under the guise of a ‘golf 101’ session. They were then surprised by Henderson and the Skechers Canada crew and given some of their own golf swag to take home.

Henderson took time to share her insights of having a winning mindset, day-to-day training tips, what it was like for her growing up in Smiths Falls and now playing world-class golf. Students had the opportunity to ask Henderson questions, and some students even had the chance to do a putting demo with her.

“It was so exciting to see all the kids, some of my former teachers, and to be back at Chimo,” says Henderson. “Students were so excited to see me and that was just such a great feeling. I was so excited to see them and hopefully I can inspire them in some way - I'm just excited for all the opportunities that they have.”

During the visit, school principal Sherrie Gutherie surprised Henderson with plans to name their gym after her – the Brooke Henderson Gymnasium. An official unveiling is expected to take place later this school year.

"To have this gym where I have so many fond memories, be dedicated and be in my name going forward is just so amazing and it was a big surprise,” expressed Henderson. “I love this gym. I loved gym class; it was the best and I loved being a part of this school.”

After the formalities, Henderson visited with students, taking selfies, and signing autographs.

“As a school district, we aim to create memories, build connections, and inspire. I know students will carry this experience through their time at the UCDSB and beyond. We are so proud of Brooke, what she has accomplished, and what she continues to accomplish. The future dedication of Chimo Elementary School’s gym is truly well deserved, and I look forward to it becoming official. Once you graduate from the UCDSB, you are a part of the UCDSB family for life,” says Trustee Jamie Schoular. “We are also thrilled to receive this kind donation for our C4K foundation from Skechers Canada and Brooke Henderson. Donations like these are a true testament to the magnificent work that our foundation does to help students and families with their various and unique needs.”

C4K helps to level the playing field for UCDSB students and their families with a focus on aiding children to participate in summer camps, sports, dance lessons, and other activities that help them thrive outside the classroom. The Foundation also helps families with unexpected costs or when they’re in need of extra support, providing items such as eyeglasses, EpiPens, and warm clothing during the winter.
