February 11, 2019 (Lyn, ON) – Today the students from Lyn Public School kicked off their winter spirit week with a pajama day and pancake breakfast to help raise funds for the Champions of Kids Foundation(C4K).
Students gathered in the gym and sat cafeteria style in their house teams while staff served and topped pancakes with maple syrup. The syrup was donated by Golden Moment Farm in Athens. Staff and parent volunteers prepared the pancakes in advance, including ones to suit special dietary needs.
Students were encouraged to bring a $2 donation for C4K. In total, the breakfast raised $312. Champions for Kids is an Upper Canada District School Board charity, formed in January 2008, to discreetly provide financial support to help children participate in sports, arts and other activities outside of school hours, or special requests from families with unique needs.
“This is an annual event for us,” said Principal Teresa Polite. “It’s a great way to kick off our Winter Spirit Week. The breakfast and the week’s events are organized by our Student Leadership team. We’re really proud of them, and our student population, for their leadership and creativity.”
Lyn Public School developed the idea of house teams this year to support their wellness goal, and to foster a better sense of belonging for all students. Each house team is made up of students from Kindergarten to Grade 6, with a member of the school’s Student Leadership team in each house. Students always take part in special activities within the school in their house teams rather than by class.
